Picking up after years on the slide
SCOTTISH skiing has been in decline for at least a decade – but resorts hope their fortunes are changing.
Statistics gathered by the Ski Club of Great Britain suggest the number of skier days north of the Border is down from 366,000 in the 20001 season to only 78,700 in 20067. And a study by East Anglia University found north and east Scotland had experienced a reduction from a typical 35 days of snow cover a year in the 1960s to 26 now.
But this year, Cairngorm has already exceeded its annual target of 51,000 skiers, Nevis Range had its best March since 1999, Glencoe expects April to be its best month this year, visitor numbers for Glenshee are about nine times better than last year, and the Lecht has had up to 20 per cent more skiers than last year.
