A study into how the Western Isles can benefit economically from wind and wave power scheme while protecting the environment has been announced.
Scottish Energy Minister Jim Mather told a conference on renewable energy in Stornoway of the plan.

It has been welcomed by Lewis Wind Power (LWP), which has proposed 181 turbines for Barvas Moor on Lewis.

The Scottish Government has still to make a decision on whether to give the scheme the goahead.

If approved, its supporters said it would create jobs and make a contribution to green energy targets.

David Hodkinson, director of LWP, said the company’s proposal struck a "positive balance" between longterm sustainable economic benefits and important environmental considerations.

He added: "We will work constructively with the government and its agencies to ensure this report will result in lasting economic benefits from renewable sources."

Thousands of objections to LWP’s scheme were sent to Scottish ministers, many from local people, but the scheme has been backed by the local authority, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.

RSPB Scotland has raised concerns about its impact on wild birds, such as golden eagles.
