Planners select superstore site
Council officials have recommended their choice for a superstore site in a small Borders town.
Both Sainsbury’s and Tesco have targeted Kelso as a potential location for a new development.
A report to councillors recommends that they select the Pinnaclehill site which is favoured by Sainsbury’s.
A final decision on where the preferred location for such a development in the town should be will be made by Scottish Borders Council on Thursday.
Tesco wants to build a 46,500ft store at the town’s Spylaw which developers say could be accompanied by a business park.
Rival firm Sainsbury’s has said it could create 200 new jobs with a 30,000 sq ft supermarket at Pinnaclehill.
Planners have recommended the latter site be chosen as the authority’s preferred option.
If that is agreed, any supermarket on the land would still have to go through the normal planning procedures.
