Brand Rex wins £3m aircraft carrier contract
BRAND Rex, the Fifebased data cabling company, has secured a contract worth more than £3 million for work on the communications network of two new aircraft carriers ordered by the Ministry of Defence.
The "blown fibre" network supplied by Brand Rex will provide the basis for all internet network communications on the two new ships, which are to cost £3.5 billion in total.
Glenrothesbased Brand Rex was selected by the Aircraft Carrier Alliance (ACA) from a short list of five manufacturers.
The system, a type of fibreoptic cabling which is blown into preinstalled ducts, will use a new product in Brand Rex’s Blolite range.
It is designed to cope with the twists and turns the cables have to take when they are fitted in ships. Paul Lines, chief executive of Brand Rex, said that he was delighted after winning the MoD contract.
He added: "Beyond the obvious kudos for the company, this will serve as an excellent illustration of the many benefits blown fibre offers for new network installations across all industry sectors."
Sections of the ships, which have already been named the HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, are to be built at the Rosyth dockyard.
Brand Rex will also provide training for Royal Navy to be able to add new fibre to the network on board the ship, allowing repairs to take place without the ships having to be returned to base.
