Superdrug to take on 1000 apprentices
SUPERDRUG, the high street health and beauty chain which employs more than 16,000 people, said it planned to take on around 1000 new retail apprentices by 2009.
The move comes in the wake of an announcement by the Learning and Skills Council which showed that apprenticeships can help improve business performance.
The company, which has around 900 stores in the UK and Ireland, launched its retail apprenticeship programme at the end of 2007 and has had 200 apprentices start to date with a further 700 planned for this year.
Superdrug has set up a dedicated NVQ qualification and apprenticeship team, which it believes will bolster its existing "retail academy".
Chief executive Euan Sutherland said: "Superdrug is a people business.
"Our success depends on the skills of our team members."
