New jobs and research centre for D3 Technologies
D3 Technologies, the high profile Strathclyde University spinout, yesterday announced plans to set up a new centre for making clinical molecular diagnostic products that aim to provide quicker and more effective detection and treatment of diseases.
Strathclyde University formed D3 last year after securing one of its biggestever investment deals. Renishaw, the London Stock Exchangelisted equipment maker, invested around £5m in cash and equipment in the new company in return for a 75% stake.
D3 yesterday declined to say how much was being invested in the setup of its new research and development and processing base at the Nova Business Park in the Robroyston district of Glasgow. However, it added that 22 "highvalue jobs" would be created at the site.
The investment will be supported by a regional selective assistance grant of £250,000 from the Scottish Government.
D3’s expertise is DNAbased diagnostic tests that can detect diseases, or the genetic predisposition to diseases, much quicker than current tests.
It also develops products that aim to be the first in the world to examine simultaneously single samples of, for example, blood for disease testing.
Jim Reid, D3’s founder and director, said: "Early detection means earlier intervention and better patient care.
"Screening for multiple bacteria and viruses one by one, using current methods, takes time something that many patients can’t afford."
D3 Technologies was originally formed by a team from Strathclyde University’s chemistry department and has benefited from Scottish Enterprise’s Proof of Concept programme.
