Biomass plant work to begin next week
THE building of a £24 million biomassfuelled wood pellet and energy plant at Invergordon will start next week.
Northern Irish company Balcas says the plant will produce 100,000 tonnes of brites – the firm’s branded wood pellet – enough to heat 20,000 homes per year.
The plant, which uses sawdust and other wood fibre, will be self sufficient in electricity, and will also provide a further 5MWe to the national grid.
Highlands and Islands Enterprise has provided £5.5m for the project, which is expected to be fully operational in March 2009.
Balcas claims the plant will create 38 fulltime jobs and also decrease carbon emissions by 170,000 tonnes per year.
