A SPECIALIST centre for training unemployed teenagers to work in Scotland’s booming construction industry has been rubberstamped by Glasgow City Council.

The Construction Skills Academy will open by August. Aimed at young people aged 16 to 19 not in education, employment or training – known as Neets – its courses will respond to industry demands for workers to help to regenerate the city.

The academy, at the former St John’s Primary School in Laurieston,

is expected to provide at least 266 annual training places, with more than 50 per cent finding jobs afterwards.

Projects such as the Clyde Waterfront and the 2014 Commonwealth Games are putting pressure on the industry.
